On March 1, 2024, the University of Baguio Laboratory Elementary School organized an event in celebration of Academic Olympics activities with the theme “Enhancing Academic Excellence and Values through Transformative Learning.” The event highlighted different activities such as the academic race, poster making, coloring contest, and academic jingle during the culminating activity at UBLES.
During the event, many students participated in an academic race where the activity had 5 representatives per section from grades 1-6. The grade-level teachers distributed a question to the participants about the different subject areas. In this game, each group needed teamwork to solve problems and find solutions, and each student thought critically about the given question. After the game, the first group to finish the academic race was in first place (champion), followed by second and third place.
The second activity was poster-making on February 23, 2024. There was only one representative per section for the three categories: category 1 (grades 1 and 2), category 2 (grades 2 and 3) and category 3 (grades 4 and 5). Participants were able to bring their materials, such as pencils and coloring materials (poster paint, oil pastels, watercolors, and crayons). However, a 1/8-inch illustration board is provided to all participants. During the competition, participants were given an hour and thirty seconds to finish their work, and the top three emerged as winners in each category.
The last activity of academic olympics was the academic jingle competition. In this activity, each section composed their own version based on the melody or tune of any song. The song composition is 2-3 minutes, and the lyrics were originally composed by the students. Also, students used colorful props and costumes as they performed on stage to attract their judges with their performances. However, they were not allowed to use any musical instruments during the competition. At the end of the program, performers received an award as proof that everyone deserves commendation for their spectacular performance in the competition.
The annual event of academic olympics is a testament of teamwork, collaboration and unity as they emerged in a fun learning environment where every learner has the opportunity to showcase their talents and skills achieving quality education by having a conducive learning environment.
